Petrov lies 25 km south of central Prague and 4 km west of Jílové u Prahy. The municipality comprises Petrov, Bohuliby and Chlomek. In 2025, it had 821 residents.

Petrov was probably founded in the 13th century by monks from Ostrov Monastery, and the village is first mentioned in writing in 1310. The historic centre is a circular village green with a pond and old lime trees. Archaeological finds attest to medieval gold mining within the municipality. The Třeštibok natural monument extends into the southeastern edge of Petrov's cadastral area.
